Nicola Sturgeon’s “dismal” education record is a sign that her long reign as First Minister has been a failure according to former Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy.

The SNP leader’s record in power is being scrutinised by the former MSP and he has torn apart her claims that she would make closing the educational attainment gap between the poorest and prosperous pupils “her defining mission.”

Just last week, the Scottish Government announced that they were dropping this ambition, which was described as the “ultimate betrayal” by some critics.

Mr Murphy has taken a deep dive into similar statistics to find that Ms Sturgeon has failed on her remit of improving the education system throughout Scotland.

He revealed: “After 15 years of SNP power there remains an enormous income penalty in Scottish education. Young Scots from the most deprived areas are less likely to leave school with even one Higher qualification than the richest pupils.
