IN LESS than one week many elderly, infirm or just cash-strapped Scots will be banned from entering the centre of Glasgow by car. This now appears to be just on a whim from the SNP-led Glasgow City Council and not backed up by pollution level figures. Is this really within the remit of a few councillors to effectively banish a sizeable percentage of people from accessing the Royal Concert Hall, City Halls, and the Theatre Royal amongst others? The public transport system is just not up to scratch, particularly at night. The SNP has got this badly wrong as usual. Gerald Edwards, Glasgow.

Scottish Independence isn’t over. Polling puts it, consistently (and stubbornly), at the mid-40% mark. In other words, the future of your nation is still well within the margin of error.
Scotland Matters reached almost 40,000 people last month, through our website, newsletters/briefs and YouTube Channel.
We can only do this thanks to you. We have been expanding non-stop since 2019 and now possess more active platforms than any other pro-UK group; all on a shoestring budget.

In recent years particularly the SNP has promoted a fake news agenda, whose success in convincing certain sections of the population is being illustrated by correspondents to The Scotsman. Recently, they have focused on the strange idea that Scotland is a “colony” of England. Anyone with a smidgeon of historical understanding knows that to be ridiculous. Now we are on to the non-numerate claim that Scotland has a “pocket money parliament” (DW Lowden, Letters, 24 May). It is a fact that Holyrood receives all of the revenues it collects in tax plus an extra £12-15 billions every year from HM Treasury, simply for being in the UK. This is the killer blow for secessionists: how on earth would they compensate for losing that extra funding which they would forfeit if they left the UK? That is why they have to deny the SNP/Greens’ Scottish Government’s own figures, which contradict their claims, are correct — a weird position to take. As for Mr Lowden’s claim that Scotland cannot borrow, that is another falsehood. It is true that borrowing levels are capped. But why wouldn’t they be? Do Scottish nationalists seriously expect the Bank of England to act as lender of last resort for a regime that has shown extreme financial incompetence and spending incontinence? Jill Stephenson, Edinburgh.
THE more we read about the half-baked SNP/Green Deposit Recycling Scheme (DRS) the more it appears as if they are trialling a gag for the Fringe. British Glass has now stepped in to advise that ‘mechanically broken’ glass can’t be recycled as the small pieces of glass and the difficulty in separating the different coloured glass make it unviable to do so. Green (about the gills) Lorna Slater, Minister for Circular Economy, appears to have made something of a booboo when she spoke of recycling glass bottles along with plastic bottles and aluminium cans. Seems that kerbside collection is the way forward for recycling glass. Who would have thought? Ms Slater may mean well but sadly her attempts at introducing DRS are proving just as successful as the SNP’s nationalisation of Ferguson Marine to propel the construction of the ferries languishing on the Clyde. What have the people of Scotland done to have to suffer the constant indignities heaped upon us by the SNP/Green coalition? And before any SNP/Green smart alec chips in, Westminster had absolutely nothing to do with the shambolic decisions undertaken by this Coalition of Cretins. Bryan Wright, Greenock, Renfrewshire.
Once again the Highlands and islands are being let down by this centralised nationalist government. While Raigmore Hospital in Inverness has served our community admirably for the last 40 years, everyone involved with the hospital knows that it is nearing the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced. Senior management, doctors and nurses, Highland Council and the patients are all aware that what’s now needed is a modern, fit-for-purpose hospital. However, Humza Yousaf says the Scottish Government has no plans to build a replacement. Given the age of the hospital and the fact that we have an ageing population, it is imperative that the Highlands and Islands has a new facility to meet our future needs. The government says it is doing everything in its power to keep young people from leaving the Highlands and islands, but young people want and expect the best medical facilities they can get for themselves and their families and realise they are not going to get that with the outdated Raigmore Hospital. Given this government’s record on building new hospitals, even if it gave the go-ahead now the project would probably take about 10 to 15 years to complete. Therefore, it is imperative that we keep up the pressure until the politicians agree that the Highland capital and the rest of the north as a whole require a modern hospital that can provide for our future. Hugh Millar, Thurso.
