HUMZA Yousaf is turning a blind eye to removing Nicola Sturgeon’s membership of the SNP when he should have taken it away (“Humza Yousaf refuses to suspend Nicola Sturgeon after her arrest”, heraldscotland, June 12). Similarly, he has ignored very valid calls for the removal of Lorna Slater from his ministerial cohort when he ought to have sacked her. Mr Yousaf did not fix the Scottish NHS when he should have. He has even run a coach and horses through the validity of the independence movement. Just what is the SNP actually in favour of apart from destroying women’s rights, motorists’ rights, islanders’ rights and keeping failed personnel firmly on board? Dr Gerald Edwards, Glasgow.

Scottish Independence isn’t over. Polling puts it, consistently (and stubbornly), at the mid-40% mark. In other words, the future of your nation is still well within the margin of error.
Scotland Matters reached almost 40,000 people last month, through our website, newsletters/briefs and YouTube Channel.
We can only do this thanks to you. We have been expanding non-stop since 2019 and now possess more active platforms than any other pro-UK group; all on a shoestring budget.
Please help us to keep doing this and even expand. Consider a donation to our crowdfunder. Every penny goes to producing material that stops Scottish secession and the SNP.
Nicola Sturgeon, former first minister of Scotland, now simply an MSP, says: “I would never do anything to harm either the SNP or the country”. Really? Does this mean causing strife in families and communities and splitting the nation into two warring factions with her single-minded obsession for Indyref2 does no harm to the country? Not to mention the wasted millions on illogical, headline-grabbing pet projects… but for the grace of the Barnett formula, Scot-land’s purse would scarcely attract the most desperate of moths. How any right-minded, sane individual can be taken in by this silvery-tongued charlatan is beyond logic? Stan Hogarth, Strathaven.
As a medically qualified beneficiary of the Barnett formula I sympathise with Marjorie Ellis Thompson’s friend (Letters,io June) regarding his brain operation in Glasgow, but her take on it provides good anecdotal evidence about its relative generosity to Scotland compared to England when she asserts that he would still be waiting for it if he lived in London. As for Loch Ness being so full of water that England “will never let Scotland go”, not only should comments about its fullness be mindful of its unseasonably low levels just now, but consider that the most recent political proponent of a scheme for water to travel south of the Border was Boris Johnson. Need I say more! Hugh Pennington, Aberdeen.
Gloating at the travails of the SNP will be the worst option. Now is a window of opportunity to set out a positive vision for the Union. Tangible things like the reinstatement of the Anglo-Scottish railway lines and the expansion of North Sea oil should be matters of immediate concern – making the UK “match fit” and resilient. This will broaden the appeal of the Union – not to mention the UK’s governing party – in Scotland, the Red Wall and the South. More blue-collar jobs in Scotland and the North will mean less housing pressure in the South. John Barstow, Pulborough, West Sussex.
Aside recent political Scots news, the country is in a mess. When one of the two main TV channels runs a news item saying an ex-First Minister has passed her driving theory test, we’re reaching the Pyongyang level of keeping the people informed. Shame on you, STV. What’s next as a major item? Jack McConnell’s shopping list? Alexander McKay, Edinburgh.
