South Scotland Labour List MSP, Carol Mochan, has attacked the SNP Scottish Government for failing to tackle the growing number of those waiting for a social care assessment.

Figures from earlier this year showed that 240 people in South Ayrshire were on the waiting list- just for a care at home assessment.

And nationally, figures for the week ending July 25, show there were 6,253 people in Scotland waiting for a social care assessment in the community, or in hospital.

There were also another 3,964 who had been assessed, but were still awaiting a care package.

The Labour politician also said the dire statistics come two years on from the SNP announcing the scrapping of non-residential care charges, claiming ‘no progress’ has been made in reducing the waiting lists for assessments.

Commenting, Ms Mochan said: “These figures are a damning indictment of the government’s plans to shake up the care sector, demonstrating how little engagement with the sector and indeed service users there has been.
