NATS have been accused of “pandering to the anti-car agenda” of the Greens by slashing cash for major roads projects.
Tories claim upgrade funds have fallen from £502million in 2016-17 to £26million for 2022-23.
But Holyrood agency Transport Scotland disputed their figures obtained under freedom of information.
The row came weeks after Transport Secretary Mairi McAllan vowed the Perth– Inverness stretch of the notorious A9 would finally be dualled by 2035 — ten years later than previously pledged.
Drivers have also blasted the SNP–Green coalition over pothole-riddled roads, with a massive £1.7billion repairs backlog reported in 2022.
Tory shadow transport minister Graham Simpson said: “The SNP have presided over a staggering fall in investment which indicates their contempt for and betrayal of motorists.
