The NHS is Scotland’s most popular public service but all the evidence points to a system at breaking point.

Patients are struggling to access GP appointments and attending accident and emergency departments can be harrowing.

The ambulance service has already raised the alarm over bottlenecks in the system and staff are at their wit’s end.

The revelation that nurses are set to declare a “national emergency” today is another red flag.

They are saying that one in three nursing staff in Scottish hospitals has reported having to treat patients in inappropriate settings.

These include corridors and cupboards as a result of bed shortages.
