SNP MP Alison Thewliss has called for an end to “unnecessary suffering” caused by the two-child benefit cap. She is being devious. There is no limit on the number of children parents and carers can claim for children born before April 5, 2017. However, families with children born after April 5, 2017, were subject to the two-child limit. Why should population growth be encouraged when we are told there is a climate emergency? Why should taxpayers fund the lifestyle of those who have more children, many of whom do not work but get benefits? Alison Thewliss should be told “two is plenty”. Clark Cross, Linlithgow.

MY, how things change. In 2017 the launch of the Glen Sannox on the Clyde was accompanied by a blaze of publicity. The attendees included the then First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and her Transport Secretary, a certain Mr Humza Yousaf. Fast forward and we have just had the launch of the Glen Rosa in the presence of the Economy Secretary Mairi McAllan. No First Minister, no Transport Secretary either. A some-what downgraded exercise this time. I wonder why? Gerald Edwards, Glasgow.
THE uncertainty surrounding the difficulty, if not the impossibility, of a layman like myself determining what may or may not amount to a penal offence under the Hate Crime Act is down to the semantics of the relevant parts of that Act which include terms such as “reasonable”, “reasonable person” and “likely”. These are subjective terms and thus arguably capable of different interpretations by different people, including different members of the police force charged with deciding whether specific complaints are or are not offences. In a democracy, for a law carrying the possibility of imprisonment to be respected as just and enforceable, it must be easily understood. As it stands, this Act is not and if it cannot be amended to clarify it, it should be repealed. Alan Fitzpatrick, Dunlop.
HUMZA Yousaf has suddenly realised the toxic nature of cosying up to the Green Party’s Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater. We knew that ages ago. Bryce Wilson, Ayr.
