The SNP’s new Westminster leader refused to condemn pro-Palestinian activists accused of hounding a Jewish business out of Aberdeen.

Stephen Flynn also appeared to draw a comparison between Israel and the “brutalist and horrific” actions of the apartheid-era South Africa during a council meeting in the Granite City.

The Aberdeen South MP has risen quickly through the ranks after being first elected in December 2019 following several years as SNP group leader on Aberdeen City Council.

In 2016, the city was rocked by allegations of anti-semitism towards Jewish businessman Nissan Ayalon, who operated stalls selling Jericho Skin Care merchandise in two Aberdeen shopping centres.

He had been forced out of business in both Belfast and Glasgow by pro-Palestinian protests before moving to Aberdeen where the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign continued to hound him.

Lib Dem councillor Martin Greig and independent councillor Marie Boulton brought forward a motion for a full council debate in December 2016, describing the protests as “anti-semitism masked as anti-Israel sentiment”.
