Councillor Aitken is perhaps best known for Glasgow’s manky streets, her attempt to exploit sectarianism to smear a political rival, ludicrous idea of calling the city council a ‘government’ and apologising for boozing with SNP colleagues during lockdown.

The Glasgow council leader’s latest wheeze is also worth some scrutiny. At a cost to taxpayers of almost £10million, Aitken decided to dish out £105 gift cards to around 85,000 low-income households.

This has generated a heated debate on a community Facebook page, with one online poster stating: “I’m so angry about this. Work in a well-known supermarket and first sale came through my checkout at 10am was 3 litres of vodka. Paid with this gift card.

There have also been accounts of drugs dealers taking the cards from desperate addicts in exchange for heroin and crack. The going rate for a £105 card is around £50 worth of drugs … but, of course, the dealer decides.
